As a long time private tutor and therapeutic teacher, I have tutored since 2007, and tutored privately as well as holding a specialized teaching position since 2012. I began as many prospective tutors begin: tutoring for the college they are currently attending. Since then, I have worked for various tutoring companies - learning centers, followed later by online services, before finally teaching in a therapeutic classroom while also starting my own in-home service.
What is DPI?
My reason for wishing to create my own company is the idea that every family and student lead their own lives, and a business needs to be able to keep up with those needs. Education is ever evolving; new paradigms and practices in the field of education (such as the utilization of technologies in the classroom) predicates a need for rapid implementation of new strategies to match these changes. A good tutoring service is one that can help to save the student and their family time and money, while staying flexible enough to address their ever changing demands, as well as the varying demands of their classes. Many services sell "packages" - long-term commitments that ask for a great deal and offer little at the time they are agreed upon. Shouldn't a family/client get to know their tutor before making such an agreement? See the learning process for themselves, as well as the benefits? To personally know the tutor who is guiding their loved ones (or themselves) through their academics?
With minimal overhead and a great deal of adaptability, as well as a highly specialized service that changes to fulfill the needs of the student and family (rather than asking the family to adapt to theirs), the idea of an affordable, customized at-home learning experience is at the heart of my business. A unique teaching philosophy combined with practicality, available to all who seek it out.
Over time, I realized that I enjoyed the teaching process thoroughly, and that there was a demand for tutors who truly got to know their students; who could understand what drives them along with their individual needs. When someone hires a tutor, it is with the hope that they will be able to relate to the student in a way that cannot be done in a traditional classroom environment. Once the tutor can relate to a student, they gain insight into how the student learns best, as well as what motivates them to learn. Through my years of tutoring I have come to realize that this relationship works both ways: a student learns to "borrow" techniques demonstrated by the tutor during the learning process, and mimics them for their own benefit. My greatest joy comes not from knowing a concept, but watching a student understand an idea for the first time, or connect that information in a way they did not previously understand. The client gains some of the insight and learning techniques I have obtained over time. It is said that teaching is an art - and I feel that the same can be said for studying. Whether it is for help with a single homework assignment, a long term supplement to mainstream education, or preparing for a major test, the passion and prior teachings of a tutor can make the difference between having a recitation and an experience; watching a video and being taught.
